Check these before you call

  • Power. Is the opener plugged in, and does the outlet work? Check the GFCI outlet and the breaker.
  • Safety sensors. The two small sensors near the bottom of the tracks need to face each other with nothing in between. On many openers, blinking lights mean the sensors can’t see each other.
  • Lock mode. Many wall buttons have a lock or vacation setting that turns off the remotes.
  • Manual release. If someone pulled the release cord, the opener runs but doesn’t move the door until it’s reconnected.
  • Remote battery. If the wall button works but the remote doesn’t, start with a new battery.

If the opener hums and the door doesn’t move, check the spring above the door before anything else. A broken spring is one of the most common reasons an opener seems to fail.

Common opener problems

  • Motor hums, door doesn’t move: often a stripped drive gear, or a broken spring.
  • Door reverses before reaching the floor: sensors out of line, or travel and force settings that need adjusting.
  • Opener dead after a storm: power surges from Houston thunderstorms can damage the circuit board. A surge protector helps prevent it.
  • Grinding or a slapping chain: a loose chain, worn rail or failing sprocket.
  • Remotes and keypad don’t work: dead batteries, lock mode, or they need to be reprogrammed.

Repair or replace?

If your opener is 15 to 20 years old, needs both a new board and a new motor, or doesn’t have safety sensors, replacing it can make more sense than repairing it. Openers made for the U.S. market since 1993 are required to have an automatic reversing system. If yours doesn’t reverse when something is in the door’s path, it’s time for a new one.

Opener types technicians work on

  • Chain drive: strong and affordable, but louder.
  • Belt drive: quieter, a good fit when there’s a bedroom over the garage.
  • Screw drive: fewer moving parts.
  • Wall-mount: mounts beside the door on the torsion bar and frees up the ceiling.

Questions people ask

Why does my opener light keep blinking?

On many openers, blinking lights mean the safety sensors are blocked or out of line. Clean the lenses and line them up so the indicator lights on both sensors are steady.

Can a broken spring damage my opener?

Yes. Running the opener against a door with a broken spring can strip the gear or burn out the motor. Unplug the opener until the spring is fixed.

Can I get a new remote or keypad programmed?

Yes. Tell the technician the opener’s make and model when you call so they can bring a compatible remote or keypad.
